On Sunday 14th November Pairc Uí Chonaill played host to the finals of the U7 & U9 hurling street leagues, organised by Cobh Juvenile Gaa Club and kindly sponsored by Cobh Credit Union. Following on from the U12 finals on the previous Friday night, where we had three finals, Sunday saw 6 more finals take place, with Waterford winning the overall U7 competition and taking the Paddy Daly Cup home after an exciting ‘golden-score’ victory over Limerick.
In the U9 section Connacht had a similarly close victory over Leinster to win the Bertie Kelly Cup. The weather was better than could have been hoped for in the middle of November and this allowed the young boys and girls to show off their hurling skills in the best possible setting. The improvement in the standard of hurling on view at these age categories since the introduction, by Cobh Gaa Club, of the Primary Schools Coaching Initiative under head-coach Christy Kidney was evident for all to witness.
After the games finished all players were presented with medals and received some refreshments back in the club pavilion. A big thank you to Cork senior football stars Alan Quirke and Nicholas Murphy who came along on the day, accompanied by their old friend ‘Sam Maguire’ to add to the occasion. The day was a fitting end to an event which saw over three hundred boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 13 playing 63 hurling matches in a seven-week period. Great fun was had by all the players and great entertainment was given to their friends and family during the competition. Thanks to all who assisted in the organisation of this huge occasion and for looking after all the youngsters of the Great Island in such a professional manner. Looking forward to next year already.!
