The junior A’s rocked the runaway leaders and previously unbeaten Douglas Hall Athletic on the Stephen Ireland astroturf on saturday evening with a 4-1 win that was well deserved. This was a great performance by the whole squad and it reinforces the challenge for promotion again this season. Luke Stavrianos set the tone for the evening when he cut in from the left and curled an unstoppable effort to the top corner of the net, an outstanding strike to grace any match. Six minutes later Wanderers doubles their lead. Dave Cummins rode a tackle on half way then played a super ball into the path of Stavrianos. Stav flipped the ball over two defenders where Joe and Sean Moynihan were in on goal. It was Sean who connected but his effort crashed off the crossbar and rebounded into the path of Cummins and his shot went in off the underside of the bar.
Wanderers held the lead ‘till half time. Douglas cut the deficit to one in the 57th minute with a glancing header into the top corner from a free kick. It was six minutes again before Wanderers restored the two-goal cushion. A sweeping move from the right saw a few neat one-touch passes, the final one from Joe Moynihan, picked out Dylan Sheridan on the right and he slotted a left foot effort under the advancing keeper. Wanderer’s defenders had some serious work to do before super-sub Butch Fingleton put the game to bed in the 84th minute. Some great work and skill from Sean Moynihan put him in a position to pick out Butch with a pass on the right side of the area. Butch drove toward goal and rifled a shot past the keeper. Sean Moynihan was again superb in midfield for Wanderers while the back four of Farrell O’ Connor, Dominic Roche, Iain Barrett and Paul Ronan were outstanding throughout.
Cillian Tallon worked his socks off for the ninety plus minutes and Stav showed he still has the X-factor up front. Butch wasn’t too bad when he came on either!! Well done to Peter O’ Halloran, his management team and all the squad involved this evening.
