Cobh Wanderers continued their preparations for the coming season with a convincing win over local rivals Springfield at Oldchurch Park this evening. The start of this game was frantic with both teams getting stuck in and trying to establish some dominance. There were very few chances created in this early period. Wanderers eventually opened the scoring on the half hour mark following a neat pass from Davin O’ Neill to find Owen Kinsella in the box. Kinsella curled a great ball round the ‘keeper to the top right of the goal.
This settled Wanderers and they started to pass the ball better and create good chances. On 42 minutes Eddie Nolan made one of his many surging runs down the right wing. Following a one-two with O’ Neill, he fired the ball across the box. Keating in goal for Springers parried the ball straight to the feet of Ian Stapleton who finished easily to make the half-time score two nil. Wanderers piled on the pressure in the second half and showed what this squad is capable of by adding a further four goals without reply.
Three minutes into the 2nd half damo Brady crossed from the left and found Conor Meade in the box. Meade finished neatly to bag the first of his hat-trick. In the 78th minute a poor back-pass was intercepted by Meade and who ran on and slotted the ball past Keating to make it 4-0. Meade completed his hat-trick in the 82nd minute. Again Eddie Nolan supplied the cross from the right and Meade got in front of the defender to cooly finish under the ‘keepers body. The scoring was rounded off in the 87th minute by Ian Stapleton.
The ball fell to him in the box about 10 yards out and he tucked it to the ‘keepers right and into the net off the inside of the post. The club wish to congratulate Ian Stapleton on his call-up to international amateur squad. Another great achievement for a player who has tasted the success his ability deserves over the past couple of seasons.
