Press Release – 2012 World Suicide Prevention Day

Published

on

Each year on the 10th September we mark a very important date which is World Suicide Prevention Day.  On this day we are united by emotion and by memory.  United by memory of lost loved ones to Suicide and united by emotions of hope and promise that the tragedy of Suicide IS going to improve.

And how do we help things to improve? We can all play a part in this. Your friends, your family, everybody has a circle of people around them and if you happen to notice a change of mood in a friend, a change of behaviour in family member and them doing things like giving away possessions and talking about death then these are all possible signs that something could be wrong.  What do you do? Talk to them and ask them are they okay and most importantly LISTEN to what they say.  There are lots of people out there who can help such as the Family Doctor, Counsellors, the Gardai etc. and there is a 24 hour Suicide Helpline number called 1 Life 1800 247100 and not to mention the support which is always available from the Samaritans which is a low cost number on 1850 60 90 90.

We can all play our part in supporting ourselves, our friends, colleagues and family members.

Breaking The Silence is a Cobh based voluntary group that works to help create a Suicide Safer Community by connecting the person at risk of Suicide with life preserving resources. We are an entirely voluntary Community Group and without the support of the Community we could not do the work that we do.  For information on upcoming courses with Breaking The Silence please email training.breakingthesilence@gmail.com and to keep up to date with group activities you can find us on facebook by searching for ‘Breaking The Silence Cobh’.
