Minister for Research & Innovation and Cork East TD, Seán Sherlock, has hailed the latest Live Register figures for the Cobh area, saying that they represent a confidence that is constantly growing.
“The nearly 4% drop in the Live Register for the Cobh area is significant,” said Minister Sherlock.

“It shows that the plan put in place by the Government – when we inherited a broken economy – is working. However, it is important not to become complacent. This Government is committed to creating more and more employment and the opening this month of the Local Enterprise Office in North Cork is yet another signal of that intent to get Ireland back on track. While the drop is welcome, these figures are still too high.”
There was a 4.24% drop in the Mallow area, while nationally the figures dropped 7% when compared with the same time last year. Currently there are 1,107 persons on the Live Register in the Cobh area.
“The Live Register has now fallen for 22 months in a row, a remarkable statistic by any standard,” said Cllr Cathal Rasmussen.

“While the recovery has not touched everyone, and is not visible in every community, we are slowly getting there. 61,000 jobs were created in 2013 alone. There is still much to be done and I am hearing that on the doorsteps.”

Schemes introduced by Labour Ministers, such as JobsPlus, already supporting 1,800 jobs, JobBridge and Springboard have been targeted to help those out of work for longest to access training, education, work placements and full-time employment.

“The results are steadily working, as these figures show,” stressed Minister Sherlock.
