Cork East Fine Gael TD David Stanton has welcomed today’s announcement by Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan TD of an additional €2 million funding for Cobh Landslide Programme. This latest tranche of funding brings the total funding for the project to just over €12 million in the past three years
This further €2 million is in addition to the €1.5 million allocated earlier this year and larger amounts allocated in 2011 and 2012. It will allow Cobh Town Council and Cork County Council, who have also contributed to the scheme, to carry out further remedial works to stabilise the landslide problem in Cobh thus reducing possible damage to property and improving public safety.
Over the last few years there has been considerable investment in Cobh, Spike Island and the greater harbour area. All these developments such as the Cobh Landslide Project, investment in Cobh Library, remediation of Haulbowline coupled with the efforts of Cobh Tidy Towns, Cobh Tourism, Cobh Chamber of Commerce and the Local Authorities have greatly increased the tourism potential of Cobh town and the Great island area and provided a boost to the local economy.
