Cobh Tidy Towns had a very busy week. The power washing and gum removal was finished on the block paving in the town centre. Litter was picked on the approach roads to Cobh on several days. A huge amount of grass was cut in the Old Church Cemetery by our TÚS worker Darren and volunteers Kevin and Hendrick. Volunteer Liam Kavanagh is spending the best part of a day each week painting the railings surrounding graves in the Old Church Cemetery. Eight volunteers spent Saturday morning painting railings in the Cemetery and others painted white the facing edges of the steps between Sandymount and the Old Street while directing multitudes of tourist towards the Old Church Cemetery.3 volunteers painted poles and bollards and still more volunteers made the final preparations prior to planting the area by the Black Railings and removed 8 bags of plastic debris. A full bag of cans, bottles, plastic bags and beer boxes were gathered from the Burma steps on Saturday morning after the Emerald Princess Liner docked. Another half bag was collected on Sunday morning before the Independence of the Seas arrived.A full bag of bottles and cans was collected from the steps of the Rock on Sunday also. This is so unfair for visitors and locals alike and disregards the huge effort put in by so many people and organisations in Cobh to make our town an attractive place. It’s interesting to see that Cork County Council wants to extend the Drinking in Public ByeLaws to the rest of “Cobh”. There really isn’t much point if it’s not going to be enforced!
We are delighted that a volunteer has “adopted” the area between the Grotto in Assumption Place and the sharp bend by Keatings Londis.
On one of the wet days, signposts were also washed clean of green algal growth and on the dry interludes Cobh Person of the Year, Jim O’Rourke continued spraying weeds on the footpaths around the town. Congratulations Jim – a very well deserved award. Thank you for your never ending enthusiasm and hard work. Entry forms for the Cobh and Great Island Tidy Districts Competition are available from Cobh Credit Union and Cobh Town Council Offices.Join us on Saturday mornings at 10am by the playground on the Five Foot way if you would like to help out.
