Cobh YMCA celebrated the opening of their new premises with an open day event featuring green screen digital imagery, beer goggles and musical bananas…and a glowing endorsement from Minister Sean Sherlock.
Young people, their families, staff, volunteers, Councillors and funders were all in attendance to hear Minister Sherlock declare the new facility officially open. He met with staff and volunteers to hear about the YMCA’s digital media training and what opportunities are available to young people in Cobh. He also heard first hand from young people themselves about their film making and what they had learned through technology such as the Makey Makey tool that turned bananas into a keyboard and the beer goggles which are a talking point around the effects of alcohol on your judgement.
Minister Sherlock said “ well done” and that he’d “learned more today about what we can achieve as a people in this little microcosm here in Cobh”. He went on to describe the YMCA as ‘wonderful’ with’ such imagination and creativity’ and as a ‘place that people learn by doing’ that would lead to a more rounded person if everyone had this approach in their education.
YMCA prgrammes and services are available to all eligible parties and to find out more please call 021 4814060 or email cobhadmin@ymca-ireland.net
