The Great Island Historical Society had its annual excursion on Saturday June 27th. This year it was decided to head for beautiful West Cork. The first port-of-call was Galley Head Lighthouse where the Attendant Lightkeeper, Gerald Butler, accorded the group a Céad Míle Fáilte followed by a wonderful tour of the Lighthouse and its environment. The tour was most informative and entertaining.
The Society then headed for Clonakilty to partake of some refreshments in Ó Donovans’ Hotel. This was followed by a visit to the West Cork Model Railway Village which included a tour of Clonakilty town on the town’s road train.
Then it was off to Glandore for the purpose of visiting Ireland’s most visited megalithic site, the nearby Drombeg Stone Circle, also known as the ‘Druids Alter’. The monument, which dates from 800 to 1100 years B.C. Consists of 13 closely spaced stones. A little to the West of the monument are two round stone-walled prehistoric huts and a fulacht fiadh ( cooking place ), which feratures a hearth, a well and a trough in which water could be boiled by the addition of red-hot stones.
Next on the schedule was the elegant Celtic Ross hotel in Rosscarbery where the group enjoyed a gorgeous meal before heading for Cobh.
The day was a thoroughly enjoyable one facilitated in no small way by the very competent, courteous and patient bus-driver, Stephen.
