The Autumn marathon season climaxed on a wet October Bank Holiday Monday in the nations capital when twelve Ballymore Cobh athletes took on the challenge of Dublin City Marathon 2015.

Still shy of two years since rebuilding of the club began, it gave us great pleasure to see our O35 Womens Team secure the Silver Medal in the National Marathon Championship held as part of the 26.2mile event.

Making up the second-placed trio were Sonia O’Sullivan and sisters Orla O’Rourke and Kathryn Carruthers, with the last named making an impressive club debut on the day.

Sensational running from each of the ladies and we congratulate them on bringing the yellow and black colours on to the national podium.

Throughout the field there was many courageous performances with each and every one of the Cobh contingent doing the club proud as a result of their efforts.

For the record, they crossed over the line as:

Sonia O Sullivan 3:03:39
Orla O Rourke 3:20:34
Kathryn Carruthers 3:30:26
Shane Meyler 3.31.33
Una French 3.51.37
Deirdre Meyler 3.54.24
Natasha Durity 3.56.37
Sinead Daly 3.56.54
Rob Doherty 4.01.18
Kevin O’Keeffe 4.05.57
Ber Ryan Rowe 4.17.25
Michael Ryan 4.39.06

The clubs growing Cross-Country fraternity recently made the journey to Conna for the County Championships where Lisa Mullane and Ruth Phelan ran well in the Women’s 4K with Terry Murphy, John O’Reilly and Liam Hurley representing in the Men’s 7k.

The Ballymore Cobh juveniles turned out in force in Conna also and didn’t leave empty handed either! Each and every runner put in a valiant effort. Maggie Sillett took the 4th place medal home in the girls U13 1500m race. If that was not enough, Maggie, along with Emily Sheridan, Caoimhe Gilmartin and Emily O’Reilly took the U13 silver team medal home. Brilliant running from the girls. The U13 boys duo of Harry McDwyer and Jack Worrall both had outstanding finishes in their race also.

The Club’s Little Athletes had a great day at the North Cork venue also. Áine Sheridan put in another determined performance in the girls U11 race to place 14th out of a very large number of competitors. In the boys U9 race, Ryan McCormick placed 6th, earning himself a medal and along with team mates Jake Doody, Darragh Boyd and Austin Tayoro, who all finished well up the field, taking gold in the U9 team placings.

Closer to home, three of our athletes recently took part in the BHAA/HSE 4mile Road Race where Tony O’Sullivan (26.58), Tom O’Riordan (28.37) and Angela McCall (36.26) all ran with credit on the day. Further positive news followed recently when it was announced that Ballymore Cobh AC now rank as the third biggest athletics club in the county of Cork, based on the latest membership figures released.

Since the re-birth of the club, a little over eighteen months ago, a lot of hard work has went into rebuilding both the junior and adult sections of the club and without the help of many volunteers we would not be where we are today.

The club has ambitious plans for the future and welcomes athletes and coaches of all levels and experiences to come and be part of one of Cobh’s true success stories.

Onwards and Upwards.
