The results were released last week for the second round of judging in the Cork County Litter Challenge. Once again the results show the huge problem of cigarette butts on the streets and footpaths of Cobh. Between Dave’s Coffee Shop and English’s newsagents 227 butts were counted. Between the Rob Roy and the end of the Old Street 222 butts were counted. This was judged on Tuesday – just one week after Tidy Towns volunteers picked up thousands of butts in the town centre and ashtrays were fitted to many litter bins. On Saturday six Tidy Towns volunteers swept and picked up hundreds of cigarette butts between Bank of Ireland, the two squares and the BMC. Two other volunteers were at the volunteering Fair at the Community Centre trying to attract new volunteers.
The Tidy Towns volunteers meet every Tuesday at 6.30 pm and Saturday at 10.00am at the playground on the Five Foot Way. We welcome new volunteers and undertake a variety of different tasks that includes planting flowers, cutting grass, painting, sweeping and litter picking.
