June got off to an exciting start with club runners taking part in the half marathon and relay marathon as part of the Cork City Marathon weekend. The Pender brothers, Stephen and Carl, were joined by Sinead Daly in successfully completing the half marathon distance of 13.1miles. This was a great achievement for all three athletes and they can now use this solid base as a platform for the rest of the season.
Yvonne Allen, Karen Russell, Eibhlin Cassidy and Kevin Jones also played their part, as each were involved in teams that completed the relay section of the marathon. This was an equally creditable achievement, given some of the relay participants have only taking up running in the recent months.
All told, to have seven members competing across the different divisions of the marathon was a great starting point for the club as we continue to grow in size and ambition.
Next up in a busy months racing was a visit to Fota Island, where Helen Devery and Doireann Ryan went over the line together after taking on the challenge of the woodland surroundings in the 5k Trail Run. Both girls enjoyed the variation of trail running and are seeing improvement in their running with every week that passes.
On the road race scene, Kevin Jones continued his busy summer schedule by taking part in the 6km event organized by local employer Merck Millipore. Kevin was joined by Tom O’ Riordan who led home the Ballymore AC pair.
Further afield, Trevor Cummins completed the Ballyheigue half marathon in an impressive sub 90 minute time to finish a very creditable sixth in a field of over one hundred and fifty.
All our runners who raced this month are showing the benefits of the training being undertaken in the last number of weeks.
Weekly speed sessions continue at The Track on Wednesdays at 7pm under the tutelage of club coach Rob Doherty, while regular weekend runs take place from Cuskinny at 8am on Saturdays and Sundays.
