Saturday 3rd December saw the very first “Rebels Unite In Hope” which was the coming together of four Suicide Prevention Groups to organise a Celebrity Soccer Tournament in Turners Cross followed by a Dinner Dance at Cork’s Ambassador Hotel. The Suicide Prevention Groups which organised these events consisted of Mayfield Action on Suicide, Let’s Get Together Foundation Midleton, SAFE Glanmire and Breaking The Silence Cobh.
The Celebrity Soccer Tournament was fantastic with each Suicide Prevention Group represented by a host of Cork GAA, Soccer and local celebrities! Cork GAA’s Donal Og Cusack, Graham Canty, Kieran (Fraggy) Murphy, Michael Cussen, Michael Shiels, Alan Quirke, Paul Kerrigan and many others were involved, all brilliant role models in our local community! Glanmire won the Tournament after beating Mayfield in the final, with Michael Cussen accepting the trophy on behalf of his team cheered on by their supporters.
The Dinner Dance was officially opened by Cork’s Deputy Mayor Cllr. Michael Ahern who spoke about the importance of Suicide Prevention and the after dinner speaker was Joan Freeman, Founder of Pieta House, a wonderful organisation providing free support to people who are Suicidal. Joan’s vision is to have a Pieta House (www.pieta.ie) within 60 kilometres of every single person in Ireland. Cork’s RedFM provided extensive promotion of the event in the weeks coming up to the 3rd December and Dave Mac from the RedFM team was the MC for the Dinner Dance. He spoke of the need to address Suicide at a national level in Ireland just like has been done in relation to Road Safety.
All sponsors were thanked on the evening for their support and signed GAA, Munster and Cork City jerseys are currently being auctioned in addition to Roy Keane’s jersey from the 1996 FA Cup Final.
Breaking The Silence is a Cobh based voluntary group that works to help create a Suicide Safer Community by connecting the person at risk of Suicide with life preserving resources.
