A champagne and strawberries reception greeted the attendees last Friday 26 November for the Cobh People’s Winter Ball in the Commodore Hotel, Cobh, which was hosted by the Cobh & Harbour Chamber.
The Gentlemen attended in all their finery and the Ladies were dressed to the nines. After an excellent meal the Betty Moynihan Memorial Award for the Cobh Person of the Year was announced. To rousing applause, Vice President of the Chamber, John Sweeney announced the 2010 winner – Maria Kidney.
Maria was nominated for her outstanding voluntary work. Maria founded the Friends of Londiani a now registered Charity organisation, set up to bring healthcare, education and clean water to the people of Londiani. Maria spoke lovingly about the inspiration she got from her mum, Phyliss, who was also a winner of this award in the past. She spoke of all the hard work the volunteers in Londiani do and how important it is to have a community working together.
Michael O’Connell was a special guest of the Chamber on the night, celebrating over 50 years in business in Cobh. He thanked all of his wonderful staff he had working for him over the years, many of whom were in the room on the night.
There were some very lucky winners of the raffle on the night with the main prize of two tickets to Manchester United sponsored by suitdistributors.ie. went to Mrs O’Connell, Cobh.
With the official act of the evening over, The Big Band took to the stage and entertained the crowd with their wonderful performance keeping everyone dancing long into the night. The Chamber would like to thank those businesses who attended the event and those who donated prizes. Your support is very much appreciated.
