The European Commission has further reiterated that it is up to the Irish National Authorities to ensure that the necessary measures are taken in relation to the Haulbowline site.
‘I wrote to the Commission in early September to request answers on the following issues; interpretation of data that identified residual uncertainties; and the lack of adequate analysis of Chromium VI.’ said Mr. Kelly.
“The Commission has stated that the waste located at the East Tip should be disposed under a valid waste permit in accordance with Article 9 of the Waste Framework Directive.
“It has been emphasised by the EU that no waste licence is in place and this is in complete contravention of EU Legislation.
‘I would like to ask Cork County Council as to what their precise course of action is.
‘Further inaction will ensure that the costs for dealing with the site in an environmentally safe manner will increase.’ he continued.
The petition is due to be heard in the coming months in the European Parliament.
‘It is disturbing that the site has had no licence for the last ten years and that the delegated waste management Authority, Cork County Council, have failed to address this serious issue. This situation cannot be allowed to continue and it must be tackled immediately’, he concluded.
