Pairc Ui Chonaill was a very busy place on Saturday morning 27th August last when our under 9 hurlers took part in the annual “Johnny Leahy” blitz. For the first time in it’s history, the blitz was not contested for a winner’s trophy and instead was run in adherence to the “Go Games” policy of the G.A.A.
This system of small sided games provides the platform for the children taking part to be more involved in the play and ensures greater enjoyment & satisfaction for all. Cobh played host to visiting teams from Ballygarvan, Bishopstown and Na Piarsaigh and with each of the clubs fielding two teams simultaneously, almost 80 juveniles took to the four pitches and hurled their way through six games each over the two hour period of the blitz.
The whole spectacle proved thoroughly enjoyable as effort & skill was displayed in abundance and though no trophy was up for grabs, it didn’t thwart the desire expelled by the young players to contest the sliotar with the “clash of the ash” to be heard at regular intervals around the Pairc.
A great “buzz” existed at the conclusion of the games as tired but happy juveniles departed for home with “goody bags” in hand and visiting team mentors expressed their compliments & thanks at having been invited to be part of a very well executed event.
Well done to all the Cobh lads for their fantastic contribution and much appreciation to the mentors & referees who managed the quantity of matches played.
Our thanks also to the Leahy family whose sponsorship of the blitz enabled the purchase of the refreshments for the juveniles.
