Cobh Golf Club had an incredible run in the Pierce Purcell knockout competition last weekend in Mahon Golf Course. On Saturday morning Cobh recorded a huge win over Castlemartyr with a 4 1/2 to 1/2 victory. In the afternoon Cobh beat Fermoy 3-2 and on Sunday morning Cobh beat Mallow by another 3-2 win. In the afternoon final against East Cork, Cobh was up in 4 games deep into the back 9. Coming down the stretch Cobh ‘s lead was down to 2-2 but was dormie 2 in the final game. Unfortunately, Cobh could not maintain its very high level of golf and the momentum shifted to East Cork who closed out the game in the sudden death play off hole.
It was a gallant effort overall by Cobh’s golfers against a club that had 120 players contesting for places.
Our players that contested the week-end were John O’Connell, James O’Shea, Ben Price, Tony Piggott, Mark Moran, Gordon Hillgrove, Tony McKeown, Alan White, Aidan Long, Karl Griffen, Liam Laffan, Dermott Mulcahy, Eoin Wilson and Pat Feen.
Congratulations to team Manager, Steve Mulcahy and to his selectors, Denis Ryan and Seamus Barry for their efforts in preparing a Cobh team that came so close to victory.
