Conor Counihan and Cobh native Treasa Goodwin Smyth to be honoured by the County Cork Association on Aug 10th in Cork

Over the years we have all heard about how much the people in Ireland think about those who have emigrated, we have also heard in reverse that the folks who leave Ireland never forget their home patch of ground.

The New York County Cork B.P & P Association decided many years ago, that these two ideals should be brought together on a positive note, they decided that every two years they would have a gathering of the immigrants and natives of Cork County.
2012 sees that gathering happen on Aug 10 at Rochestown Park hotel in Douglas Cork. As is tradition the Cork Association will honor two outstanding Cork people one from the big Apple and one Native Cork person.

This year the theme of the Honoree is Sports, the New York honoree is Treasa Goodwin Smyth nee Coffey from Ballard Cobh Co Cork who was a Camogie Player with Cobh/ Imokilly before she emigrated in 1986. When she arrived in New York she became a player with the New York Young Ireland’s and during her term as a player she won several North American Board Senior Champions. Treasa also served for ten years on the New York based team. Treasa has moved on to the TV world and is the only Cork and Irish women to have comentated on the famed St Patrick’s Day Parade on WNBC 4 TV. She is also the host of her own Irish Radio show which is broadcasted each Sat at 11pm Irish time and can be heard world wide on wvox.com.
Each September she is proud to be involved with both the Senior Hurling and Football All Ireland Finals she presents the pre-game half-time and post game show on WFUV 90.7fm.

This year the Cork Association of New York, will honor Cork born Conor Counihan. from Aghada. Conor had an amazing career with the GAA playing Football and Hurling with Aghada.

and division league with Imokilly. Conor was called to the big time and played with the Cork senior team winning two All Ireland Senior Medals in 89 and 90. Conor had the distention of captained the Cork Senior football team from 85-87. He served as a stint on the Cork Senior Football selection committee. In Feb 2008 he was appointed bainisteoir (Manager) of the Cork senior Football team and two years later 2010. Both he and the Cork took the Sam Maguire home to Cork.

Cork folks home and abroad are hoping that Conor and the lads will have Sam back in the City by the lee this September.
Aug 10th promises to be an amazing night at the Rochestown Park Hotel. The festivities get under way at 7.30pm where food and drink can be enjoyed courtesy of the Cork Association. Dinner presentation and dancing will continue into the wee hours. This is a unique opportunity to meet and greet the emigrants also to mingle with family and good friend who you just did not have the pleasure of meeting yet.

When you read about the two honoree, you realize how small this world is. Both of them may at present live 3000 miles apart but they have a common thread to Imokilly which was very much a part of their sporting careers. Also Treasa was in NY on WFUV radio talking about Conor and what he was attempting to do in All Ireland Finals. These two may never have meet in person but after all is that what the Cork Association in-visioned bringing people together from near and far.
