Cobh native singer/songwriter Mick O’Regan returned to the Sirius Arts Centre last Friday evening for a gig originally scheduled to take place on December 3rd which unfortunately had to canceled due to the adverse weather conditions that had hit most of Europe at the time.
Before Mick took to the stage, local group The Fatigue, consisting of Annie O’Dea and Mark Lonergan, débuted with an acoustic set. Annie’s haunting voice was perfect for the famous acoustic’s of the West Gallery and with Mark cracking the odd joke between sets the pair entertained the packed gallery before the main event.
Mick arrived to rapturous applause and played two sets with a mixture of songs from his new album ‘Downtown Stories’. This album, which is the second release from Mick is heavily influenced by his years growing up in Cobh and his latter years growing up in England spent trying to hold on to his identity, his constant rebelling against conformity, complications and bedevilment.
The evening was a great success with the West Gallery full to capacity and everyone enjoying Mick’s brilliant musical genius and great sense of humour. The CD, ‘Downtown Stories’ is on sale in Supervalu, Curley’s, Gilmores Bar, Hi-Chapperal (Cobh) and is also available to buy or download as mp3 online from iTunes, Amazon, CDBaby and Lastfm.
Mick O’Regan’s latest album:
“The album, the second release from Mick, is heavily influenced by Mick’s years growing up in Cork, Ireland, and the latter years living in the UK trying to hold on to himself, his identity, his constant rebellion against conformity, complication and bedevilment. There’s dancing, fun, mellowness, madness, softness, roughness, drink, lack of drink, bitterness, great joy, hangings, an angel in the form of a blind German…….Life really doesn’t have to be as complicated as we are lead to believe. We need a simplicity in life these days, which is unfortunately lacking. And most of all, we need a good oul sing-song! So, come on…get up and join in! ”
About Mick O’Regan
Mick has been involved around the music scene in Ireland since the early 70’s. He was a founder member of the cult folk-rock favourites TINGUMAJIG. He has been constantly writing songs, stories, plays and performing solo and in groups since TINGUMAJIG disbanded. He released his debut solo album entitled “DENNIS REGAN” (named after a fictitious toothless, blind ballad singer who lived in Mick’s imagination!!) in 2009 which sold well in Ireland and in the US. His work speaks of simplicity in life. He is constantly in rebellion against the forces that would complicate our lives for their own gain – Political Correctness….. Managementspeak and it’s invention of a new language….. those who tell us our lives are incomplete without HD Television….. Most of all, Mick believes, we are always in need of a good oul sing-song….. He has just released his second CD entitled DOWNTOWN STORIES which is already selling well with a lot of radio play in Ireland and the UK. Buy it, turn it up and join in……..
