A Gun Salute is taking place on Spike Island on New Years Day, Wednesday 1st January, 2014, to mark the start of 2014. This will be the third year that the New Year is being welcomed by a gun salute on Spike Island, following on from similar events in 2012 and 2013.
The gun salute will be fired from the southern side of Spike Island at 2.00 pm on New Years Day.
The salute is an appropriate event for Cork Harbour and for the furtherance of Spike Island as a major iconic tourist destination in Cork.
To mark the event, Cork County Council is offering individuals and families a fantastic opportunity to visit Spike Island on Wednesday 1st January at significantly reduced rates to experience the rich history which this Island has to offer.
Free Children’s Entertainment will be provided on the day from 12 noon – 4.00 pm which will include adventure games and orienteering
Hot drinks (tea, coffee and alcohol-free mulled wine) as well as freshly made soup, sandwiches, wraps and cakes will be available in our café
Visitors will also have the opportunity to stroll on the 1.6km Glacis Walk, a walkway developed around the perimeter of the fort which has unique views of the harbour.
The ferry will depart Kennedy Pier, Cobh at 12 noon (returning at 3.00 pm) and 1.00 pm (returning at 4.00 pm). The reduced rate is €5 per adult and €3 per child. Please note that tickets are limited as the ferry operates with a maximum capacity of 78 passengers only.
