LABOUR Party members from across the Cork East Constituency presented a united front when they together this week at the Firgrove Hotel in Mitchelstown where a two candidate strategy was again ratified.

Speculation as to the adding of a third candidate in Fermoy based Councillor Noel McCarthy was finally put to bed with Cllr McCarthy pledging his support to the campaigns of sitting TD Seán Sherlock and Cobh based Councillor John Mulvihill.

”While personally disappointed, I accept the decision of head office to stick with a two candidate strategy and I am one hundred percent behind the effort to get two Labour Party TDs elected in the Cork East constituency. It is time for a radical change in the make up of government and together Deputy Sherlock and Cllr Mulvihill make for a formidable team,” he said.

Depurty Sherlock said he particularly welcomed the McCarthy endorsement as much of the campaign will hinge on the Councillor’s support base stating; “I am personally grateful to him that we have come through this challenge and his endorsement means a lot.”

Among the other issues discussed at the meeting was the impending General Election campaign which it was agreed will be fought on the doorstep.

”Labour is accused of having no policies when in fact our party has one of the most comprehensive policy platforms of all the parties which are there for all to see on the Labour Party website. And this is not just in terms of political institution reform but also when it comes to getting this country back on its feet and people back  to work. People will have a lot to say on many issues and we will tackle those issues head on in an open and honest manner,” asserted Deputy Seán Sherlock.

Meanwhile, Cllr John Mulvihill said people are despairing because of increased tax burdens and the new Universal Social Charge which will see many households struggle in the year ahead.
”We have to give people hope and let them know that we will work tirelessly to create jobs and create a just and equal society as members of government,” he said.
