Pfizer job losses are a devastating blow for Cork – FF

Fianna Fáil has expressed concern at 177 job losses at Pfizer in Cork.

Party Leader Micheál Martin said: “Pfizer is a major employer in Cork and these job losses are a devastating blow.  Pfizer’s operations at Little Island and Ringaskiddy have been of huge benefit to the local economy and its growing presence over many years has been a strong statement of confidence in Ireland.  Pfizer is one of the most successful FDI companies in Ireland and I think it is important to point out that these redundancies are the result of global factors and sales, and not failings on the part of the Cork operations or its workers.”

Deputy Michael McGrath said: “First and foremost, my thoughts today are with the workers who are facing the prospect of losing their livelihood.  Pfizer provides highly valuable employment in Cork and around the country and these jobs will not be easily replaced.  It is also significant that, as well as referring to patent expiration in its statement today, the company has also cited the need for Ireland to improve its competitiveness so that it can compete with lower cost manufacturing locations. This is a message Government needs to listen to.

“While one of the drivers (patent expiration) of today’s announcement is outside of any domestic control, the job losses must represent a wake-up call for the Government to strive to improve Ireland’s position relative to other countries we are competing with.”

Cork North Central Deputy Billy Kelleher said: “It is extremely important that the Government and State agencies work with Pfizer and the employees to ensure those being affected by this decision are supported.  Cork remains a hugely attractive location for investment and Pfizer remains a major employer.  I am urging the Government to ensure the strong multi-national presence in Cork is built upon.  There is a highly skilled workforce in Cork and in particular workers at Pfizer have significant expertise that can be utilised by new investors, which must be a priority for government.”
