Running until Monday 1 April 2013 (please see special opening hours for Easter Weekend below!)
Sirius Arts Centre in partnership with the Arts Committee of Cork University Hospital (CUH) present the ‘Anamnesis’ an exhibition of new works by Marie Brett, in The Sirius Art Centre, Cobh, Co. Cork opening on the 7th March 2013.
This multi-media exhibition was based on a two year research project called the ‘Amulet’ at Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH) where the artist together with Nancy Flavey and Bernice Jones of the Ballyphehane/Togher Arts and Crafts Initiative (BTACI, researched the sensitive area of bereavement resulting from pregnancy and infant loss. The findings were collated in the ‘Amulet book’. Following this the artist received an Arts Council Create AIC award, to further develop the project.
During the second phase of the project the artist worked closely with bereavement midwifes and arts managers at CUMH, Waterford Regional Hospital / Waterford Healing Arts Trust and the Mid-western Regional Maternity Hospital in Limerick along with a number of individuals throughout the country. The staff liaised on Marie’s behalf with bereaved parents to see if they were interested in sharing their experience with her. Subsequently Marie collaborated directly with ten parents and families who have experienced loss. She creating artworks by exploring ideas around the use of amulets or keepsakes to commemorate their infant’s loss. The work manifested through dialogue and this collaboration process led to an exhibition of audio work, photographic drawings and a second Amulet book of photographs and commissioned essays. The publication will also be launched on the night and can be purchased at the Sirius Art Centre.
Marie Brett is a County Cork based artist and a graduate of Goldsmith’s College University of London and a recipient of a number of Arts Council awards.
The opening reception for exhibition in the Sirius Arts Centre, Cobh, Co. Cork, will commence at 6.30pm on Thursday 7th March and will run until Monday 1st of April 2013.
