Sweeping, planting, fixing and litter picking with Cobh Tidy Towns

On a glorious Saturday morning Tidy Towns volunteers took to the streets of Cobh. The urns at the steps by the centre gate of the promenade were planted with flowers kindly donated by Hendrick Verwey. One of the planters was flooded with water and drainage holes had to be drilled before it could be planted. The Cordyline trees along the Promenade were trimmed of last year’s flower clusters and dead and decaying brances. As our volunteers were working a tourist stopped to ask about the parking. As he leant against one of the dead trees it toppled over onto the footpath! Thankfully no one was passing at the time or it didn’t fall on a parked car.

Volunteers swept all of Rahilly street, by the seats below the Cathedral, the Velvet House roundabout, by Annie Moore and on the Deep Water Quay at the back entrance to the Railway station. All of the flower boxes and baskets have been watered in the past few days and this will have to be continued regularly if the dry weather decides to stay.

Unfortunately yet another flower box was turned upside down on the railings by the Annie Moore statue. Our volunteers put the contents back in the box and tightened thoroughly the fixing bolts on all of the boxes as any of the boxes could have been easily turned over by anyone with a mind to do so. Litter was collected on the approach roads to Cobh and the Burma steps were cleaned on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

The beach at Carrigaloe was picked of litter and debris that is brought in on the tide and now looks pristine with all of the colour on the seaside bank and in the boat. Thank you to all of our volunteers who continue to come out throughout the summer on Tuesdays and Saturdays.
