The ‘Great Island 10 Mile Road Race’ will be taking place in Cobh on Sunday April 15. The run is in aid of The Irish Cancer Society, with special emphasis on Palliative Care and is being organised by a group of local people who have lost either family or friends to Cancer.
Over the last two years the organising committee have handed over a cheque to the value of €57,000 to the ICS. This is down to the continued support of the people of Cobh and surrounding areas. The run, as always, is open to everyone.
The Cobh (Great Island) Community Centre will once again be the Headquarters for the race and all runners will leave from here on the day. Coral Leisure Centre have offered their leisure facilities to anyone wishing to avail of a shower, swim & steam after the event for a minimal fee of €2.
For those who would prefer a shorter distance, a 5km Walk will take place on the same day at 10.00am leaving from the Community Centre, 30 minutes before the main event and will finish outside the G.P.O where we will await the arrival of the runners from the main event to disco music and let go of a balloon in memory of those lost to or still battling this terrible disease.
The Mc Crossan family will present a Perpetual Plate to the 10 mile race winner in both the Male and Female Masters Categories in memory of the late Tommy Mc Crossan and Paula Rasmussen (nee Mc Crossan), who both lost their lives to cancer.
If you are interested in taking part you can contact Breda Nolan on bredanol@yahoo.ie or ring Breda on 086 3004114, you can also register on www.greatisland10.com The entry fee for the Road Race is €15 online and €20 on the day. There is no entry fee for the walk but entrants would be expected to take a sponsor card which is available from Sonya Murphy on 021 4815125 / 087 7904895 or email
sonyaomurphy@gmail.com. All money collected will be donated to The
Irish Cancer Society and no personal profit will be derived from this venture. For information on the route please visit the website www.greatisland10.com
