Cork Harbour Cycle – 10th Anniversary Sunday 4th March

Published

on

The 10th Cork Harbour Cycle will take place on Sunday 4th March. The first cycle in 2003 had eighty cyclists. In recent years more than 300 cyclists have taken part. This annual leisure cycle is organised as a fundraiser for Africa Direct. Cyclists start anytime from 9.00am to 11.00 am and cycle at their own pace. With the exception of one hill (a 5 minute walk if you’re not fit enough) it is a leisurely 40 Km.cycle , which takes about 2 ½ hours. Signposts and stewards ensure nobody gets lost. Rothar Cycles provide running repairs, mainly fixing punctures, while sponsors provide snacks and refreshments. The ferry crossing at Cobh completes the circuit, kindly provided free of charge.

Cyclist raise sponsorship for Africa Direct, a Cork based charity. Being a fully voluntary organisation ensures that over 95% of funds get to the community projects supported in Kenya. One project, a rescue centre for street children in Nairobi, temporarily houses the children while resettling them back to family life and schools before successfully repatriating most with extended family. Another project in Kipsongo supports a community of 350 displaced families who have been living, and many dying prematurely, in houses made from scavenged waste. A women’s’ training scheme has revitalised the community and funding made it possible for them to build 2 room mud houses, greatly improving health and family life. Africa Direct is a membership organisation and welcomes new members.

To register for the cycle and receive details and sponsor card, Phone 021 4821229 or email a postal address to corkcycle@gmail.com.
