The Mulcahy’s are Back !

Cobh was recently graced with the presence of the returning Mulcahy Clan. Thirty five members of the Mulcahy family gathered in Cobh recently with Michael Martin. They arrived on 27th June, exactly one hundred years after their grandfather Cornelius Mulcahy emigrated from Cobh to America. He left on RMS Olympic, the ship that Titanic was modelled on and the first of the ‘Olympic’ Class liners that were built in Belfast by Harland and Wolff. A century later the Mulcahy family came from California, Hawaii and elsewhere in the USA to gather in Cobh and remember Cornelius.

They were met by the Mayor, Councillor Sinead Sheppard, who graciously welcomed them to the town and harbour on behalf of the people of Cobh. Michael Martin organised a Titanic Trail Harbour tour for them which retraced the same journey made by Mr Mulcahy when he left to board the ship and begin his life-changing journey. On the day music for the group was provided onboard by Oilean Amhrain with Jim Halligan, Paul Devlin and Grainne O’Donovan.  The Mulcahy Patriarch was remembered in song and prayer and some of his ashes were cast into the harbour together with 35 roses. It was a moving ceremony and the day was rounded off with a visit to Spike Island where the extended family marvelled at the extent of Irish history reflected there. The main organiser, Dennis Baldwin had been planning the event with Michael Martin since last year. Butlers coaches organised a series of tours and visits for the group during their stay in Ireland.
